    The macro is still working.
    This also allows checking selected text, something not allowed in the Editor.

    I've discovered a macro that works.

    See https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/msoffice/forum/msoffice_word-mso_win10-msoversion_other/classic-spell-check-dialog-not-editor-macro-to-use/a53fff0c-f15d-4150-95d6-1724c6ddca91?tm=1551195593112

    Sub SpellCheckDocumentClassic()
    'Charles Kenyon 26 February 2019
    Selection.range.CheckSpelling
    Selection.range.CheckGrammar
    End Sub

    This is working as of today in Version 1901.

    Here is another thread showing problems from the new Editor interface!
    https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/msoffice/forum/all/word-spell-check/27c61ca4-9874-4712-87d6-bedf54bc18ba

    Please, please, please, at least return the option to trigger it via vba.

    Still not able to access it using the macro with Version 1901. This can't be that difficult!

    Here is yet another forum post complaining about the Editor and inability to use the classic spell-check dialog.

    As of December 21 - Release 1811 - the macro does not work
    This is very frustrating!

    At a minimum, the Dialogs(wdDialogToolsSpellingAndGrammar).Show command should allow use of the old one. An option in Proofing Options would be even better! This should not be that hard!

    David Lightstone. I do not understand. This is about using Word directly.

    According to a post today, the macro to restore is not working in 1812.

    The following macro by Stafan Blom appears to be working now. Release 1810.

    Sub DisplayTraditionalSpellCheckDialog()
    Dialogs(wdDialogToolsSpellingAndGrammar).Show
    End Sub

    It can be attached to a keyboard shortcut.

    See:
    http://addbalance.com/word/QATmodification.htm
    http://gregmaxey.com/word_tip_pages/modify_qat_button_image_text.html

    A bit harder, but it can be done. Still not as good as previous versions as far as appearance.

    Still a problem June 25, 2020. Version 2005.

    See previous request where we were told in 2016 that it had been fixed. A bald-faced lie.
    https://word.uservoice.com/forums/304924-word-for-windows-desktop-application/suggestions/10051359-fix-qat-buttons-spacing

    There is no reason for this! It reduces the functionality af a great tool.

    Deb,

    Although it is much more work that the menu-version toolbars or QAT modification, XML ribbon modification is very flexible and powerful. See Greg Maxey's page: http://gregmaxey.com/word_tip_pages/customize_ribbon_main.html

    Also, you can utilize this for QAT customization by adding groups from a custom ribbon to the QAT. A single button can give access to many commands. It is like adding a menu to a classic toolbar.

    I've written a macro, that works on selected text, for now, at least.
