There are a number of similar user voice requests for an improved cross-reference experience. I voted for this one as it had the most votes but please merge all the other ones.

I would like the current cross-reference fixed-size modal box to be replaced with the new experience similar to the Editor/Navigation panes

FYI, there are a couple of workarounds I use but neither of them is as simple as hitting the "split" button.

Option 1: On the ribbon, in the same section as the "Split" button, there is a "New Window" button. This opens up the same document in a new window and you can use the "snap" feature in Windows to quickly arrange them side by side on your screen. This still leaves excessive UI.

Option 2: Use the "Split" button as normal but then also select the "Mulitple Pages" button in the "Zoom" section of the "View" ribbon. That makes better use of the widescreen but can be confusing to navigate

I constantly use the "split" feature when reviewing or creating documents (which I do a lot!). However, a vertical split would make much better use of my widescreen monitor and empower me to be more productive
