Since my post just a couple of hours ago, I have found hundreds of users over dozens of threads that have, since 2010, been frustrated by this behaviour. Some replies suggest making Registry changes but this is not an option for most people. I hope that the Word Product Team (MSFT) who responded on 7 June 2017 that they were investigating this issue hurry up and make their decision.

The way Word, and Excel, operate has never made sense to me and I find it unhelpful, time wasting and highly infuriating and irritating. The sooner this fault is corrected, the happier I will be.

I agree. I don't like the defaults, they don't look good and therefore don't make sense to me. Why make the left/right cell default a space wasting 1.9mm and the top/bottom cell default 0mm so the text runs into the borders? Let me set the defaults for tables within my normal.dotm or another) template. Please.
