I'm not sure I fully understand the original post, but changing the default bullet is something I would use. I want to use the square bullet as my default, but no apparent way to change this for Word as a whole, only for the current document.

This is there. In the lower left corner of MS Word, it says: Page x of n z words. As I type, the z updates in real time to show how many words are in the current document . Further, if I select some text, it changes from "z words" to "w of z words" showing both how many in the selection (w) and how many total in the document (z).

Seems to me we have exactly this feature already and that it works perfectly. If this is not what is requested, then please explain what is needed that's different.

Seems bizarre this doesn't happen by default -- everything else on the References ribbon works this way. Way is the Index different and why would it be missing this seemingly core function in creating an index in a digital document? In our case, we need this for ebook development. Page numbers are meaningless in an ebook, only links are usable.
