For Excel this suggestion is under review (https://excel.uservoice.com/forums/274580-excel-online/suggestions/12346476-add-support-for-password-protected-workbooks) It makes sense to have this feature implement for online Word and Excel.
The need for managing password protection (turning on or off) protection on the web is very important and needed!!
This must be referring to the need for an API that performs the same functionality as "ShowHiddenText" in the desktop versions of Word and Excel object model. This is a need method and we all need the web Word and Excel API to support the same functionality found on the desktop versions of Excel and Word object model.

Yes this feature is very much needed so that documents being worked on the Web version of Word remain compatible with the desktop Word client or vice versa
