I would like to see a larger range of highlight colours, perhaps a choose your own, because I find some of the colours too dark.

You can actually choose what ever colour you want with a few extra steps! If you select the 'borders' option, and select the option at the bottom 'borders and shading', select shading at the top of the pop up window, on the left side of the screen, pick a colour from the colour wheel under the 'fill' heading, then on the right side of the screen where it says 'apply to:' select apply to text. Press okay then when you want to highlight with that colour, simply select the bucket (shading) instead of the highlighter. :)

When running the spell checker it is often hard to find the error, we need a way to use colors we like and maybe a big arrow to point to the error, in red of course.

Absolutely. The highlighter colors are either too bright and obnoxious, or they are too dark. Could there be a range of pastels from which to choose? There is an incredible amount of options for choosing your text color; highlighter color should have a similar range of choice.

yes! Where is the old color palette? The colors given in Word for Mac are fine on screen but print way too dark and print much darker ( and in different colors) than displayed on screen.
