Word locking up and attempting to connect to network drive from Recent Items list
Word (or Excel, PowerPoint, etc.) is locking up and then producing an error stating it is attempting to connect to a previously used network location in the Recent Items list, when opening the application when off the network. This renders the application useless, and after acknowledging the error, the application must be force quit.
Open Word documents from a network share, work on it, close the document and application
Take the computer off the network (i.e. - Take it home), open Word. Word will then lock up for about 3 minutes and then produce an error stating it failed to connect to the network location of the last opened document that was on a network share. Clicking OK to this error then again makes Word completely unresponsive and must be force quit
To avoid the issue, the user is having to clear any documents that have been recorded in the Recent Items list, that are on a network share that they will move away from. Additionally, even after fully clearing this list, the menu pop-out listing all Recent Items still shows documents that are no longer present in the now cleared list (when viewed in its own separate window.
This issue is rendering all Office application useless, unless the user clears any/all Recent Items that they had opened from a network share, before closing Word and taking their computer away from/disconnected from the network shares they were operating with just prior.

I have this problem too. Word cannot find documents on it's recent documents list. IOS Catalina on a Mac.
This behaviour in all Office applications is unacceptable. Programs stall for minutes looking for a document that is on an unconnected server. Also, removing recent documents one by one is inefficient. The programs do not allow selection of more than one document at a time. Office 2011 had an option in preferences where the number of recent documents could be set to zero. That is not available in the Mac Office 2016 version. However, it is available in the PC version. How is this progress?
