How can we improve Word for Mac? Vote for an existing idea or share a new one.

Save as PDF stays on "Processing" when overwriting previous PDF

Cannot overwrite a PDF file. I have to “Save As” as a new PDF every time. I have the latest version of MacOS and Word. This did not happen before. If I try to Save As with the same name as an existing file, I confirm that I want to replace the file, but then it freezes on “Processing” and I cannot use Word anymore.

Then I’ll have to quit Word (I don’t have to “Force Quit”, just regular Quit) and the problem keeps happening no matter where I save the file (locally or in my integrated Dropbox folder).

The dialog is basically a rectangle with a grayed out progress bar which says “Processing” and a Cancel button which does nothing when you press it.

I have a similar problem with large Word files ~ 300 pages - on a Windows PC no less! Doesn't matter if there is a previous existing PDF file - the program never ends processing - unless I save the exported PDF file under a different name - then it works.

Same problem; glad I'm not the only one.

MacBook Pro 2017 13" with TouchBar. Using High Sierra (as another user said that would fix the problem).

I have the same issue. Only workaround I have is to save as a new filename, then it works again.

I called Microsoft and because Pete could not recreate the problem on his MacBook (or so he said), he said it was a problem with my machine and referred me to the forum. He said if he couldn't make his machine do it, then it's my machine. Pete refused to acknowledge that it's a problem with the MacBook Pro TouchBar model and he then hung up on me. Rude; unprofessional; no technical support at all.

Same problem with MacBook Pro with TouchBar 2017 model. I've called MSOffice 365 and they can't help. They said they sent a "fix" to my subscription, but it made no difference. Considering we are paying a monthly subscription, Microsoft needs to fix this issue.

Same issue here. I could not overwrite existing PDF when export as PDF. It would freeze up.

MacBook Pro with TouchBar 2017 model.

PDF locking issue when Save AS PDF over existing PDF still occurs.
        Freezes on "Processing"
        Word for Mac 15.37 (170815)
MacBook Pro 16 with Touch Bar
Workaround is to delete PDF prior to saving.

Macbook Pro 15" 2017 (with touch bar), same issue. Figured the problem out before finding this discussion but very frustrating to find it "out there" so long unaddressed by Microsoft.

Same machine, same issue, and this is a year after people began noting the problem! I also use the Print to PDF workaround but I shouldn't have to. Fix this, Microsoft!

Same issue for me. MacBook Pro with touch bar 13", latest macOS.
Reinstalled whole macOS without any result.
        MS please fix it.

I would encourage those with this issue to contact MS office 365 support to let them know of this problem. I've been communicating with their support specialist and they claim the issue is specifically related to my specific device only. I've told them that others have similar issues and seems to be on MBPs with touch bar.

I've tested this on a 13" MBP without touch bar with the same word version and overwriting a PDF file works fine. I'm wondering if this is specific to Macs with touch bar.

Same issue here on a brand new 15" Macbook (w/touch bar) purchase last week, with a clean install of Office 365.

A workaround would be to File, Print, Save as PDF. This seems to work and was able to replace PDF file without crashing Word.
