  1. The "New Version on Server" message is confusing to those used to Track Changes verbiage

Several users familiar with Track Changes functionality in MS Word (all versions) are having trouble with the wording of the "A newer version of the file is available on the server" "Discard Changes" button when opening a file from Teams

At issue is the expected behavior of a Word document and the resolution of warning messages.

Our researchers will verify that the latest version of the file in question is available on Teams via Word Online and then open the file in Word (Open in Word) using the Teams interface.

When the file opens, whether in Word 2016 or Word…

  2. Bug Word custom UI ribbon no longer loading when Word is launched with Automation since Update 1901

After the Word 1901 11231.20174 Update was introduced our custom Add-in template and many others I've tried while investigating are failing to be displayed when Word is launched by Automation. (Still not working on 1902 11328.20146)

Launching word normally from the start menu shortcut or by running winword allows the ribbon to be displayed OK, However when word is launched programmatically and is run with the Winword.exe /Automation -Embedding parameters the add-in is not displayed.

Checking the Developer -> Document Template "Templates and Add-ins" form the add-in is displayed and is checked "Checked Items are currently loaded." but it's not…

  3. Revert "By Author" default colors in track changes from pink/gray back to red/blue

With the most recent Word update (May, 2019) the default "By Author" colors for edits made using track changes has changed from red and blue to pink and gray. This is an unnecessary and terrible change. Red and blue are easy to see onscreen and in print. Pink and gray are not. There are a lot of other good user suggestions in this forum of how to make track changes better. Please work on implementing some of those useful suggestions rather than "fixing" things that aren't broken. And for the sake of those who earn our living using track changes…

  4. Numbering of comments

    Dear Microsoft,

Why did you eliminated the numbering of the comments? It is such a bad idea! In a document where I have 20-30 comments, it has become just impossible to keep track of these comments anymore. Please, please bring it back.

  7. Go back to the original spelling and grammar check for Word documents.

Please return to the original spelling and grammar check for Word documents. The automatic update now says "Check document," adds the number of spelling and grammar errors, won't check only a highlighted section, and requires separate steps to check spelling and grammar. It is difficult to use and time consuming. The spelling and grammar check that was in Word remains in Outlook for email. Please go back to that method for Word documents. This is a very bad upgrade and makes me question using Office 365.

  8. Word 2016 Vanishing Scroll Bar: Why make it easy to navigate a document when you can make it harder?!

Once again in Word 2016, the scroll bar vanishes when I move the mouse pointer away from the Word window. Where am I in the word document? Really can't say, the #($*#)*)#$ scroll bar has vanished.

If I select a different app, maybe Excel, the Word scroll bar vanishes and doesn't reappear until I click somewhere in the Word window. Returning from Excel to scroll down and work on the next bit of my Word document? Click somewhere in the Word window to un-vanish the scroll bar, then click the scroll bar to move through the document.

    Hey, Microsoft, maybe…

  9. Add color inversion from within word

Some method to relieve eye strain when looking at white pages with black text. However, this color inversion should not affect the printouts.
Hence, I feel there should be some separate "page viewing settings" which is different from actual color of page and texts.

  10. Sticky phrases

I find I am tired of figuring which things are "sticky" and just how, and also of going through a documnent trying to replace "-" and certain spaces with the old "sticky" versions so words stay together. Especially since those don't actually seem to work anymore. But regardless...

I'd like a command to make any chosen, highlighted set of characters "sticky": not to just be treated as a word with potential hyphenation being assigned in it if near the end of a line, but kept together period in all circumstances.

Just that: kept together, period. Nothing more, nothing less. Not…

  11. Classic / legacy FileNew Dialog removed from 1903 release please restore

The classic File New dialog from the menu versions has been available as a QAT and keyboard shortcut option until this release. Now, attempting to use it crashes Word.

    Please restore access to this.

  13. Give a list of Firewall exceptions for Office Online Help

Would it be possible to have a list referencing the exceptions to be made on a firewall in order to access help from Microsoft Office products (when we press F1 for example)?

For example, we do exams for our students and cut Internet access, but they must still be able to access the help of the product that they use.

Since Microsoft's position is clear and it no longer wants offline help, would it be possible to give us the opportunity to configure access online help?

  14. Word 2019: Please add CAPTCHA to make it even harder to use the scroll bar

Clearly, there's a strategy to make the scroll bar hard to find and hard to use, so why go halfway? The **** thing started vanishing in late 2012 with the release of Word 2013, continued vanishing in Word 2016, and still vanishes in Word 2019.

But inconvenience is not enough for me. No. I want to suffer when I scroll through a document. I'd like to see a CAPTCHA challenge before I can scroll a document and be productive. An auditory CAPTCHA would be even better because then I could be inconvenienced and embarassed in quiet presentations and meetings.

    Almost…

  15. ALLOW USERS TO CREATE DEFAULTS FOR BULLET AND NUMBERING FORMAT

Please make it possible for users to set their preferred format for bullets and/or numbers.
This includes type, indentation, line spacing and adding space between paragraphs of the same style.

These can already be manipulated but Word will always use one default selection for new bullets and numbers.

P.S. You could take this a step further by allowing users to customise defaults for specific bullet and numbering types.

This guy has a similar suggestion: https://word.uservoice.com/forums/304924-word-for-windows-desktop-application/suggestions/17375128-allow-users-to-set-preferred-bullet-format-indent

  16. In Mirosoft Word Grammer Check, add an "Okay as is (sic) " option, below the "Ignore once" option.

Adding an "Okay as is (sic) " option to the Grammar Check option would save document authors from having to repeatedly use the "ignore once" option every time they re-open a document, when the grammar is preferred to be kept "as is," in its current form; thus granting authors and writers the option of exercising artistic license, when preferred. The "sic" should be appear in brackets (as shown), and be italicized, as by rules of English grammar, such is used to denote that text should be read, and remain, exactly as it appears, per author preference, for intent, purpose, and…

  17. Return Styles Pane to 2013-2007 settings - spacing and multipule columns

    1. The Styles Pane has been changed to have increased spacing between styles even when not showing a preview of the styles. This decreases the number of styles that can be displayed. If people in touch mode need this extra space, make it a part of the touch mode/mouse mode option.

    2. In all previous ribbon versions, the Styles Pane could be set to have multiple columns, up to four columns. Now if it is expanded, it is simply a wider single column. This also cuts back on the utility of this tool.
