Increase the 259 path length limit when saving files to SharePoint online
A word document (and other office apps) opened from a SharePoint library can not be saved if the URL exceeds 259 characters. It does not make sense to impose the same limit as saving files to a hard drive when saving files to a URL as URL's are not file paths on physical storage / hard drives.
Please fix this.

This can give errors and data loss when saving to local OneDrive folders- with option Save to Computer by default. May be related to the path is converted to a longer URL

Please increase this ASAP. :-)
Most of our files are in Word and this has slowed adoption of our SharePoint project. Looks like there's a solution for Excel desktop apps.

Agreed...this was fixed in Excel, not sure why it still happens in Word. This makes for very difficult conversations with our users who find it bizarre that there are different limitations across the core office product range.

This was already fixed in Excel in build 12624.20466. Please fix it in Word, too: https://excel.uservoice.com/forums/304921-excel-for-windows-desktop-application/suggestions/10733559-increase-the-218-character-filename-length-limit-t

Can this please get fixed? We work with multiple organizations that run into this issue. The organizations require long file paths because of the granularity of the departments.
From our testing this issue just affects Word locally but does not affect PowerPoint and Excel which seems very odd.
