Navigation pane size
In the latest iteration of 365, the navigation pane opens to a pre-set size that the user cannot change. Until recently, Word would use the size last used by the user.
See this thread on the answers forum (one of several about this)
Same issue as of 2-March-2020. I agree, I have to waste time babysitting Office. What an enormous pain.
Agree with Charles Kenyon et al. Word needs to change this. Why was it changed? Very annoying to constantly having to re-set the navigation panel, every time you open a doc!!! Not solved Jan 2020.
Still not solved in January 2020. I use a high-DPI display and the navigation pane is enormous. It is distracting and unnecessarily wide.

Word used to remember the Nav-pane width. I was happier then. Now I lose time futzing.

I don't understand the reason for the change to word. All of a sudden the size of the navigation panel increased and takes over 1/3 of the screen. Why does it not keep the size last used?
For those of us who spend our days working in word, it's is an important update that Microsoft needs to do.
I've shot a video showing this madness:
MS please stop torturing your customers!!!
The new enormous navigation pane slows me down when working on a document, especially when I am proofreading two documents side by side on the screen. After opening each file and pressing Ctrl_F I have to stop, carefully manoeuvre the mouse onto the border of the navigation pane, and drag it out of the way because it actually hides nearly half of my document. The navigation pane is a tool, and tools should keep out of the way, not sprawl all over one's work.
As many people have pointed out, it does NOT remembers the size I reduce it to. Every single time I open Word again, when I press Ctrl_F the navigation pane will open big again, which on my monitor is 9.7 cm or just under 4 inches across. It doesn't matter that I close each file with the navigation pane at minimum size: it will re-open at this obese size next time.
Also needs to remember which tab is selected (e.g. Results).

I've created a work-around Add-In that addresses this. It can be downloaded here: http://addbalance.com/word/download.htm#NavPane

This also applies to Word 2016/2019.
