Make Word free for college students
Have Word free for college students. It makes it hard to work on a paper in the dorms on their own laptops when ever Word will not let them do to the fact that they have to pay for it. Some of the students are on a fixed budget.
We’re happy to hear that you’re interested in using Office for your classwork and have good news for you. We do offer Office 365 free to students! You can learn more about how to sign-up here: https://products.office.com/en-US/student/office-in-education

Open office is not the same product. There are a little functions. I use this site https://besteducationprograms.org to learn how to work with it

Just use the online version which is similar to Google Docs. It may lack a few features but everything that most students will use exists there.
There's always OpenOffice or LibreOffice
As Charles pointed out, some college/university students can get Office 365 University for $20 / year. Less the cost of a night's out beer ...
Some schools now have Office 365 Education, which is free for the students, the school pays the license fee.
Then there are the free alternatives to Office, ie LibreOffice and Google Docs. While they are not Office, they are very much feature equivalent.
What happens when the student becomes rich like Mark Zuckerberg - he will still have the free version!
What about old people - it should be free for them.
What about homeless people, it should be free for them.
If you make things free for one group, the rest of us have to pay more!

For most it is close to free, far less expensive than for us mere mortals. There is, in addition, an online version that is free. Granted, it does not have all of the features, but it does let you write and edit documents without having Word installed. You may have to get access to a full version to complete it.
