Allow defining of list indents when defining a new number format
When defining a new number format in Numbering, there is no way to adjust the list indent. I have to create a list first with the format before right-clicking on the list to adjust the list indent. This is very troublesome, and even more frustrating when list indents cannot be incorporated into a style.

This is a real area where MS can apply some of their Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology. For years these loose ends do not get addressed in a proper way.

What does it mean by the Left, Center and Right for the Indent setting in the Define new List Numbering? Why cannot MS include some decent help? It is really frustrating trying to find hunting through youtube to find someone who discovered this by accident.
List Paragraph I think is an associated Style to a Numbered List since it keeps warning each time I create a new one when in fact it is probably altering this Style.
Suzanne, thank you for that tip. However, I agree with the original poster that the way Word does this is far less user-friendly than it should be. Especially because when I try to create a simple numbered list and then change the formatting of that paragraph, I can't just copy that formatting to a new paragraph -- the new paragraph will take Word's default indentation for numbered paragraphs. Most users don't have the interest in learning the multilevel list approach, and although I am familiar with it I find it far too cumbersome to bother with for anything but lengthy documents with a lot of numbered paragraphs. For a few numbered paragraphs, I just fight with Word by constantly fixing the indentation.

It is hard to understand, that at first you have to create a numbered style and apply to a paragraph, before you will be able to adjust the list indent. It is not intuitive to do that by right-click in the numbered paragraph. Instead, most users modify indents of paragraph.

You can define every aspect of numbering if you instead use Define New Multilevel List, and each level of the list can be linked to a style. See http://shaunakelly.com/word/numbering/outlinenumbering.html.
