word 2016 style pane corrupt or buggy after update
The style pane in word 2016 no longer works after some December update. Selecting a style in the pane results in a random style 3 to 8 lines above it being selected. Macros were also lost after this update. We uninstalled recent updates but were not able to restore functionality. The only resolution has been to downgrade to 2013.
Thank you for your feedback! We are happy to report that your suggestion is now part of Office 365.
I too am having this problem despite numerous attempts to correct it by recreating the styles, using new templates, etc. Although I can at least work, the styles pane is largely useless following this update. Very frustrating when you make your living on this. Also Pascal, mine do fit in (well my customized ones, not the ones built in) and it still isn't working correctly.
It only works if all styles fit in the pane at once. In other words: if not all styles fit in the pane the error occurs. Even with deactivated preiview.
In many cases it helps to deactivate the preview, because the style-names need less space. But if you have a lot of styles and they even don't fit in the pane with deactivated preview you still have the problem.
The style-pane in the ribbon causes no problems.
I tried do double clicking each style after increasing the style window. It works.
I agree this is a serious issue. I just installed Office 2016 on a new win10 PC and Word is completely useless with this bug. I am hoping Microsoft can resolve the issue quickly. In the meantime I am reverting to an older version of Office running on win7. If the issue isn't fixed soon I will be returning MSOffice 2016 for a refund.
i am having trouble using office. it is a big dissapointment
This is a serious issue for professional users of Word. I use customised styles extensively and this bug makes working in Word inefficient and frustrating. Please fix this.
Also got this new "function" - please resolve it !!!

This is a very serious problem for businesses, like mine, that have created many Word templates. If styles cannot be used seemlessly then there is little point in using Word in a business context. Please fix it urgently.
The Styles pane exhibits the described jumping behavior on all (15) of our development installations (Microsoft Office 2016 Professional Plus on Windows 10 Professional 64-bit) and is useless. Our Authoring & Publishing system that we developed and have been upgrading from Word 2003 through Word 2016 is completely broken, as we heavily leverage customized styles. We have had to put development on hold until a fix is in place.
I also have this problem after update to the latest update in December 2015. Help please.

Here is a workaround posted by Anneliese from MSFT:
If the Styles pane is floating (vs. docked), try enlarging it so you can see more styles.
- or -
Clear the Show Preview check box at the bottom of the pane.
I need to do both and it works but it does slow you down. My pane is 6 columns wide and I can't see the preview. The Alphabetical list goes sideways NOT down but at least I have a workaround.
Another option is to go back to the Sept 2015 Word version - 16.0.4266.1003. This version does not have the problem.
I am dealing with this same issue. PLEASE get it fixed!!! The users, like me, who use styles extensively are your business customers. If we can't get our work done, everything needs to stop for you until you can get us back up and running. HELP!
I'm having the same problem, after December Windows 10 update .....The Styles pane in Word has gone Wonky ....My whole job is based around Word 2016 working normally ......I work with thousands of documents and they're all affected. Tried calling Microsoft and after an hour on the phone the MS tech gave up ........tried to give me a workaround to no avail .........Microsoft please make this a priority!!!!
Me, too. I was able to get my macros back by restoring the old template, but the Styles Pane displays this bizarre behavior. As a book editor preparing manuscripts for production, I use styles extensively, and doing my job has suddenly gotten much harder (and it's driving me absolutely nuts).
Many more than the 2 votes have had this problem. Here are 2 of the questions that have been raised in the answers forum:
There are more.
Someone PLEASE fix this, I have deadlines! The idiotic Styles Gallery is useless, and I can't stand the popout (CTRL+Shift+S), it takes too bloody long. I don't know how to install older versions of Word, nor do I trust them to work now anyway.

I too have been experiencing this issue.
It was such an issue to me that I decided it must have something to do with the installation of Windows 10 over 7 and/or the upgrade of Office from 10 through to 16 so cut my losses and did a full and very time-consuming re-installation of everything having not found any references to an issue in earlier searches!
I have now done all of the above - although there was no "old" normal file created in the Office “%appdata%\Microsoft\Templates" directory, I luckily had other backups that predated the December issues.
If I simply use the normal.dotm file for new documents it is fine, however as soon as I open any of my important documents created and edited during the period after this error (one of 3,000+ pages and another of 200+ pages) that have detailed and lengthy styles lists associated with them, they are absolutely unusable.
What the heck am to do about these? Are the building block templates or anything else going to be associated with this problem?
I would be immensely grateful if someone could come up with an answer otherwise why am I spending the cash on using Microsoft products if they are going to cause nothing but damage to my living!
PS Yes I am getting frustrated by all this!
